I developed a personality of conscientiousness from my mother disciplining us on our behavior. As I matured to adolescence, I developed the personality traits of greeableness, and risk taking. By early adolescence I very much agreed with adults when I was told, â€Å"you are too big to play with little Sandra†, â€Å"you are too big to be in third grade† and constantly asked, â€Å"how old are you? † I decided to play with the b oys and play as the boys. Why not? I was just as big and tall as the boys and was too big to play with girls, as I was told. The schemas of my personality were shaped accordingly. My personal construct was the images of the behaviors that I felt was appropriate from the perspective of my self-image and from others’ perspective. My life was consistent to Erikson’s basic philosophy: â€Å"the world gets bigger as we go along and failure is cumulative. † During my early teens, I experienced physical changes, which was natural at this life stage, yet I was uncomfortable with. I had reached puberty. At puberty, I was developing faster than my friends and this fast maturity made me feel uncomfortable with myself again. My father made sexual advances towards me. I then developed a self-concept as worthiness to someone and became promiscuous. At this time other girls were courting and had â€Å"boyfriends† and I was rying so hard to be loved and accepted. By age 15, I became involved with a 20-year-old family friend, three months later we were married. We had a very beautiful wedding on my family home’s front porch. I was such a beautiful bride. This was the first time that I felt such beauty, since Caldonia was born. I felt the love and warmth of my husband and the wedding congregation. I was loved and accepted. My husband was considerate and kind the first six months, however became violent and abusive. He drank beer only on weekends, and eventually started drinking liquor and wine. By his time I was pregnant with our first child and become a high school drop-out. 18 months later I gave birth to our daughter. I was seeking my identity as a wife, mother, and young adult. I was only 18 years old married and had given birth to two children. I was very confused about my individuality and the role to play in my situation. It was easy for me to substitute ideals for experience. After seven years of abuse and three children, I could no longer cope. I covered up all of my problems with a new love. I became addicted to crack cocaine. After four years of chasing the igh, I was arrested and sent to jail. I underwent treatment and stayed clean and sober for almost six years and started using again. By this time I am mother of six and in another abusive relationship with the father of my later two child ren. I had relived my marriage with the same patterns of alcoholism and abuse. I turned; again, to the same method of dealing with the circumstances, I started using drugs again. This time my incarceration was longer and required extensive substance abuse treatment. I entered this program with an open-mind and willingness to change. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. Currently, in middle adulthood I am more conscientious and have direction and goals for my life. I have developed personality traits of being a good mother/grandmother (generativity). I want to help others and I have a gift to give. I am no longer absorbed into the selfishness of myself. According to Harder (2009), based on Erikson’s Ego Development Outcome, â€Å"the significant task of this stage of life is to perpetuate culture and transmit values through the family (taming the kids) and working to establish a stable environment. † The development of my personality has the responsibility of many counterparts. As much as a little alcohol has been recommended as it helps in some body functions (digestive system), most countries have put strict laws on heavy alcohol drinking. Both Legal and economic tools have been used by policy makers to the maximum. This includes heavy taxation on alcoholic drinks, a raise in the drinking age from 18 to 21 years and the toughening of rules on drunk-driving (Gladwell 71). In general, drinking is associated with a kind of a weakness and a loophole to sin. That is why the Christians, Mormons, Muslims amongst other religions do not drink. However, Gladwell brings forth another perception of drinking that may have not crossed our minds before. According to him, a person’s drinking is not as important as how he/she drinks it (Gladwell 70). Gladwell goes ahead a gives a couple of illustrations to prove his point. In a story told by Dwight and Anna Heath, the Camba people of Bolivia had a rather interesting way of drinking. They held drinking parties, which comprised of a particular number of members. The members would drink, pass out, wake up and continue drinking. They drank an alcoholic drink, which they did not like for it tasted nasty. When investigated, the drink was found to be 180 proof. In fact, it was laboratory alcohol, which was thought that it could not be consumed by people (Gladwell 72). An Italian man was described as a man who drunk an 8 oz. glass of wine in the morning after the morning breakfast and a 24 oz. glass at noon after his meal. Yet, this man had only been drank twice in his life and his drinking never interfered with his work or his day-to-day activities (Gladwell 71). Lolli’s clinic in new Haven had a total number of 1200 alcoholics of which forty were Italians while the rest were Irish by the late 1950s. An anthropologist known as Robert B. Edgerton working in Central Kenya once received a warning to run away as a tribesman who usually got out of order after drinking, was coming his way. Before he could move away, the man had already arrived. However, he surprisingly greeted Edgerton in a calm manner and then moved on with his raged behavior. The man had beaten two people, knocked down a child and eviscerated a goat during the course of the day (Gladwell 73). What Gladwell has put across makes a lot of sense. However, there still must be something in our brains that is triggered by alcohol in order to make one behave the way he/she does when they consumes alcohol. Is it really how much one has drunk that makes a while man stand and abuse people who are old enough to be his parents, or become talkative when he is rather quite in normal circumstances. What about the girl who is more vulnerable to having sex when she is drunk than when she is not? Although Gladwell’s point of view is logic, there are also other factors to be considered. The Irish and the Italians are the same people in terms of species. There must be something more than the amount of alcohol consumed that would make an Irish man be more of an alcoholic than an Italian. It is also important to note that in an individual, there are always exceptions to the rules. For example, Tobacco smoking is known to be a major cause of lung cancer. However, there are those people who have smoked since the time they were teenagers and they are in their old age and do not have any signs of lung cancer. The Fault in our Stars is a young adult novel written by John Green. It is based on the remission of a 16-year-old Thyroid cancer patient, Hazel Grace who relentlessly struggles to breathe. She attends a Cancer Kid Support Group where she meets Augustus Waters, a 17-year-old guy diagnosed with osteosarcoma. They form a close relationship and constantly share their love for a book called â€Å"An Imperial Affliction† written by Peter Van Houten who resigned from writing it halfway. Upon the desperation in finding out the ending, the two protagonists set off to Netherlands to meet the author. Their journey together reveals the themes of love, grief, loss, and both physical and mental pain. Throughout the book, there are reoccurring metaphors of water and stars; water representing death and stars signifying hope, hence the name ‘The Fault in our Stars’. Each of these themes along with the repeated motifs the author creates, reaches out to the reader and causes them t o be drawn into the lives of the characters and their relation to each other. The two protagonists dread each day with the constant worry that they’d pass away any minute. Augustus and Hazel’s love for each other triumphs over struggle and hardship but â€Å"†¦ yet still [they] worried†¦ Worry is yet another side effect of dying.† The times when they are not contemplating what it means to be gone, they’re drawn into ‘An Imperial Affliction’ (AIA). John Green intended on Peter Van Houten’s charisma to be the way he wrote it as he himself also â€Å"in tellectualize[s] emotionally painful experiences so that [he doesn’t] have to confront/process them emotionally.† Both authors are somewhat related with their thoughts and feelings. The Fault in our Stars introduced many deeper topics on various themes  relevant to today’s society. John Green â€Å"wanted to be ambiguous†; therefore he was able to accurately depict the characters in their current age, with their strong personalities, which were present through the whole novel. There are no negative aspects of the text, as every part was crucial in showing different emotions, and character traits. Hazel Grace had a strong personality, a complex train of thoughts, and thyroid cancer, as it’s â€Å"fairly similar to what [Green’s] close friend, Esther had†. The novel was mostly influenced by Esther, who died of thyroid cancer in August 2010, and â€Å"after she died, [Green] had to write [his] way through it, desperately looking for some hope in it.† The setting is also inspired by her; the problematic occurrences that cancer plays in the character’s lives. The many times throughout the novel where every character experiences love, grief, loss and pain causes you to â€Å"laugh†¦ cry, and then come back for more† – Markus Zusak. John Green does this by presenting many heart wrenching events, where physical pain is shown. The pain of Hazel suffering from breathing everyday, but the unconditional love between Hazel and Augustus over power all the sadness. He also explores motifs of stars and water, very deeply. He has metaphorical words for the stars and water. Stars representing wishes and water, representing the proximity of death, which is frequently talked about throughout the book as Hazel â€Å"†¦devotes quite a bit of [her] abundant free time to thinking about death.† Another heart throbbing novel, Looking for Alaska also by John Green is similar in a way where there are two protagonists who frequently engage in conversations, drawing them closer to each other, and allowing them to explore the different themes of love, loss and friendship. In summary, the author has successfully written a gripping novel. John Green presented situations relatable to the current teen culture by speaking in the mind of a teenager. I therefore applaud to his ability to write with every word sticking to the specific character trait each of them are supposed to portray. He has engaged the readers in every page, entitling it to being an award-winning novel.
